Environment is a municipal issue too

The Lakeshore UU Congregation’s Social Action Committee tries to keep abreast of environmental issues as they have so much impact on everyone. Équiterre recently sent us information on a new campaign led by Vire au Vert. This large coalition of environmental groups encourages citizens to get involved in the municipal election campaigns coming up this November.

In Québec, over half the seats of municipal councillor are filled uncontested at each election. Citizens concerned about the environment should be challenging candidates on what they intend to do once elected to take care of our environment.

The initiative called The Planet Goes to City Hall invites us to send our municipal councillors a list of proposals under ten major themes (French only). These include giving priority to the ecological crisis, respecting nature’s limits in economic development, public and active transit, urban planning, protection of natural milieux, better water management, a zero waste objective in managing residual materials, resilience in social development, public security and urban agriculture.
