On the eve of the day dedicated to Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, I would like the Lakeshore
Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Lachine, Quebec, to affirm the following as a call to
action:
Articles 48 and 49 of the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
state the following:
Article 48: We call upon the church parties to the Settlement Agreement and all other faith
groups and interfaith social justice groups in Canada who have not already done so, to formally
adopt and comply with the principles, norms and standards of the United Nations Rights of
Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation.
Therefore:
This Lakeshore Unitarian Universalist Congregation promises to apply in all our programs,
institutions and policies this Declaration from the United Nations.
As a congregation, we respect the rights of indigenous peoples to self-determination, in
spiritual matters, including the right to practise, develop and teach their own spirituality and
religious traditions, customs and ceremonies, a tradition we as Unitarian Universalists share in
our worship and in our actions.
And, in response to Article 49: We as Unitarian Universalists, brothers and sisters in spirit, call
upon all religious denominations and faith groups to repudiate concepts used to justify
European sovereignty over indigenous lands and properties such as the doctrine of discovery
and Terra Nullius.
